Fujitsu workers commence strike action

EMPLOYEES of an Antrim manufacturing firm are threatening further industrial action if their pay demands are not met.
Up to 35 shop floor workers and technicians are striking at the Fujitsu factory in the town's Technology Park on Friday.
Staff claim the multi-national company is attempting to drive down wages with workers in Northern Ireland paid considerably less than colleagues in Birmingham, England.
A four per cent pay increase has already being rejected by the Communications Workers Union.
Union representative, Steve Cotterall says staff are determined to do whatever is necessary to solve the issue and have made an approach to the company for further talks.
"The problem is two fold - we've got a group of people from Birmingham, who have been transferred to Antrim but are being paid £5,000 less than their counterparts in England," he said.
"This is a question of parity of pay - surely it is logic staff should be paid the same rate for doing the same job in Northern Ireland."
"There is also the issue of shop floor staff who are currently being paid below the average wage in Northern Ireland and a lot are currently having to take on second jobs," he added.
Mr Cotterall says the issue is currently in the company's hands but was not ruling out further industrial action.
"We've offered further talks with them (management) but they are being intransigent at the moment."
"It's in their hands - but if there is no success regarding our offer then we will increase our strike days once we offer our legal notice to the company," he added.
