GUESTS can quite literally lodge at the bank, as the luxurious £10 million Merchant Hotel, in Belfast, opens its doors for business today.
Promising guests "unparalleled elegance and unforgettable indulgence", 200 specially-trained staff will be employed at the hotel, which is housed in the former headquarters of the Ulster Bank, on Waring Street.
The company behind the impressive proj
ect, Bangor-based Beannchor, has spent two years restoring the 146-year-old Grade A-listed property, into a small, sumptuous hotel – which they are hoping will achieve five-star accreditation.
It boasts 21 bedrooms and five suites, with prices ranging from £220 a night to £600 for the grand suite.
Beannchor, which describes the project as a "flagship of excellence for Belfast" has spent more than £400,000 on antiques and artwork and a specially commissioned chandelier from Tyrone Crystal for The Great Room Restaurant.
Headed by businessman Bill Wolsley, Beannchor is a prominent name in the restaurant, bars and clubs scene, but this the company's first hotel venture. It bought the building for £1.8 million two years ago – up until then it was being used as a money counting centre.
Marketing manager Petra Devitt said: "We are very excited at the prospect of being able to throw open our doors to the public. The hotel has the wow factor, judging by responses so far – we have had several dry runs to test food, drink and accommodation. I think it will really start to feel real when I see the first people here to enjoy our very elegant afternoon tea.''
Facilities at the hotel include: an on-site car park with valet car parking for residents; access to transfers in a Bentley Arnage; an art gallery; discreet private residents and members bar and à la carte dining with a wine list "unsurpassed in Belfast"; a cocktail bar and concierge service.
Rooms have air-conditioning, sound proofing, black-out curtains, high-speed wireless internet access and flat-screen television.
The hotel's adjoining bar, The Cloth Ear, opened last month.
