A case for pardoning deserters?
WERE the call to pardon Irish army soldiers who deserted their posts to join the British army during World War Two to succeed it would render the disciplinary procedures of the Irish defence forces a joke.
However, let us assume for the sake of argument that fighting Hitler and Nazism was their purpose.
Surely those Irish deserters posted to the Far East should not qualify since that was a battle between opposing empires, British and Japanese.
Furthermore, any Irish army deserter who stayed on in the British forces at the end of the war to quell colonial revolts should therefore also be refused consideration.
It may be stated that personnel posted there had no choice but surely there was the option of deserting, again.

Tuesday, January 31, 2012 at 11:01 PMOnce again this Nation disgraces itself by not immediately pardoning these men. Of course we should not be surprised as Eire was sympathetic to the Nazis during the war. These proud Irish men of principle were no doubt ashamed of their country's stance , whilst Britain remained the only stumbling block to Hitlers expansion plans in Europe.
