Boost for travel and business

THE opening of the Newry by-pass is good news for everyone.

Road users will have a quicker and much safer journey between the two capital cities on the island and business people in Northern Ireland could see even more visitors coming to the province to shop and spend money.

It should provide a major boost to the economy.

In fact, it is not just the journey between Belfast and Dublin that will become a lot easier. Now, there is a dual carriageway from Glarryford in Co Antrim to a few miles west of Cork.

It is a fantastic stretch of around 300 miles, taking in most of the island, from north to south.

The road, which opens today, will of course have its biggest benefit around Newry but there is an increasing number of people from Northern Ireland who use Dublin Airport, and the new seven miles of roadway will reduce travel time there.

It has been a long time coming but the days of traffic jams and tailbacks should be gone forever, as drivers enjoy a road network that is genuinely fit for purpose.

The creation of a dual carriageway between Hillsborough and Newry has also been a terrific addition to the road infrastucture.

The road is now much safer than previously and, as long as people drive responsibly and within the speed limits, the number of accidents should be greatly reduced.

At last Northern Ireland can enjoy a road network that would be welcome in any European country.
