Casinos must not come to Northern Ireland

I wish to express my complete agreement with the comments recently made on the BBC Radio Ulster Nolan Show by East Londonderry DUP MP Gregory Campbell in opposition to the opening of a casino in Northern Ireland. Gambling is a scourge on our society.

Online gambling has made it easy for many people to get deeper and deeper into debt using credit cards. I'm sure we've all read stories about people being caught stealing either from family members or employers to help them gamble more money away.

It is my view that we should be doing everything in our power to limit the number of ways that people can gamble rather than making it easier for it to take place.

Any proposal that would see a casino built would also lead to an increase in the level of anti-social behaviour.

Research has shown that a higher proliferation of gambling encourages crime and poverty.

I am pleased that Gregory Campbell has taken a stand on this issue.

As chairman of the Assembly's social development committee, he will know the terrible damage that gambling has on society.

Betsy Campbell,

Magherafelt
