Causeway site is worth an investment

THE Giant's Causeway in north Antrim is globally Northern Ireland's most saleable commodity with visitors to these shores never failing to marvel at the unique stone structures that make up this scenic world heritage site.

The iconic basalt stones have now gone on sale in an innovative web scheme by the National Trust to help raise the 18.5m needed to build a new visitors' centre at the Causeway and the initial response to the appeal is encouraging.

The National Trust has donated 4m to the scheme and applications have been made for 9.25m from the Northern Ireland Tourist Board and 3m from the Heritage Lottery Fund.

This leaves a 2.25m shortfall and hopes are high that this amount will be met through the generosity of the people of Northern Ireland and those from overseas who view the Causeway site as the "eighth wonder of the world".

The immense value to the tourist industry in Northern Ireland from the Giant's Causeway is gauged by the fact that at least 600,000 visitors are attracted there every year.

Which makes it a highly preferrable initiative by people here to purchase stones that date back to the dawn of history on these islands.
