Dissidents must be stopped
THERE has been a strong political reaction to the bomb in Lurgan which could so easily have claimed the lives of three young children.
Politicians across the political spectrum have united in their condemnation of the dissident republicans who placed the bomb, obviously meant for the security forces responding to an emergency call.
Three young children were injured when the bomb exploded and it is extremely fortunate that we are not reporting on a triple murder, as a result of the republican bloodlust.
The first and deputy first minister led the condemnation of the bombing describing their disgust and shock.
Peter Robinson called those responsible depraved criminals and Martin McGuinness called on anyone with information to contact the authorities and prevent other people from being injured or killed.
While it is good to see our politicians speaking with one voice against dissident republicanism, the truth is the bombers do not really care what they say.
They probably take a perverse pleasure in hearing the political parties condemn their actions.
The only way to deal with the dissident republicans is a robust and decisive security strategy.
The security forces are working around the clock to tackle the problem and have had some success, but they are over stretched and under-resourced.
We are once again at a crossroads in the history of Northern Ireland and unless the dissidents are stamped on now, we will enter another phase of the Troubles that will only bring misery and despair.
