Global warming: Sammy's right

While I do not agree with the DUP policy of accepting mandatory power-sharing with Sinn Fein, I have to say that as a professional physicist dealing in climate change, I totally agree with Environment Minister Sammy Wilson.

I am tired listening to the various Green spokespersons and others attacking Mr Wilson about a subject where there is no scientific consensus.

How many of these Green spokespersons have qualifications in climatology? Contrary to the view taken by Roy Beggs, the UUP environment spokesman, there is no consensus.

In January 2008, more than 400 of the world's leading climatologists from 24 different countries, including some Nobel Prize winners, voiced their objections to the so-called consensus on man-made global warming in a report by the US Senate Environment and Public Works Committee.

The fact is that the earth has been cooling over the last 10 years while CO2 pollution levels have still been rising. How can this be if it is humans who are responsible for global warming?

CO2 pollution is a result of temperature rises, not the cause of temperature rise. North America had its worst winter last year since 1950. China and Asia have experienced snow for the first time in living memory.

Clearly, it is the sun which is having the main effect on our climate. The sun is changing dramatically. The man-made global warming movement is more a political movement than a scientific one.

I think that it would be better in future that Mr Beggs and Friends of the Earth and the Greens' spokespersons got their facts right before rushing in to this debate.

Sammy Wilson is right and they are wrong. The media especially the written media in England have a lot to answer for for not highlighting the scientific opposition to global warming sufficiently.
