Importance of honouring armed forces

THE Bill presented to Parliament which would mean that the majority of shops and businesses should close on Remembrance Sunday should be supported by everyone.

Our country is at war in Afghanistan fighting for democracy against the evil forces of the Taliban and our soldiers have only just left another war zone in Iraq.

The Bill is the idea of senior Conservative MP Sir Patrick Cormack and has been given all-party support.

One of the sponsors is the North Belfast MP Nigel Dodds, who rightly points out that the public need to acknowledge the sacrifice made by the armed services on battlefields many thousands of miles away from home.

It would mean that Remembrance Sunday is given the same footing as Easter Sunday and Christmas Day.

One of the main shop workers' unions has also backed the proposal.

Some smaller business such as pharmacies and petrol filling stations would remain open to serve the public but, overall, business in the country would close as a mark of respect to our armed services.

The British public have shown how much they support our soldiers, sailors and air crew with any events to mark their homecoming.

In Northern Ireland, too, there has been an incredible welcome home for the troops.

Remembrance Sunday is not only about recent conflicts but the service of our armed forces throughout their history.

It is already a very special day to many people and it is time we made it a important day for the entire community.
