Let it snow, Let it snow, Let it snow
THE Bible is not man's Book, but rather a Book God has written to man! Everything in nature has a special message for us travellers through the world.
We need the anointing of our eyes and ears to see and to hear the divine timely message from the Scriptures of truth. We cannot afford to ignore the message of nature and its demands.
The baptism of snow-and-ice which we are experiencing presses iADVERTISEMENT nto our souls the message we need to hear and to heed. God speaks to mankind in the simplicity of the climate. It would be very foolish of us to ignore His message.
Snow is mentioned 24 times in 14 Books of the Bible. It is used to describe things as diverse as the effects of leprosy on the skin and the weather conditions when a man killed a lion in a pit. The divine message of the gospel is marvellously projected in the 'Gospel-according-to-the-snow'. There is a wonderful parallel between the expression 'whiter than the snow', and the powerful cleansing of the 'blood of the Lamb'.
Snow transforms the whole land upon which it falls. It creates a covering such as we are seeing at the present time. All that is ugly and unpleasant has disappeared and has been replaced by a new vision of beauty and purity. Such is the work of grace in our souls by the Gospel of Christ.
A snowfall creates a most wonderful contrast. Suddenly, the old things have passed away and all things have become new. It is an exchange which ever challenges the strength of man and his boast of power. As the snow succeeds in its contrasting work, man becomes a helpless onlooker.
Snow brings cleansing. In fact, the snow is used in God's Word to describe the work of salvation in the hearts of mankind. We ought to pay attention to the words of Psalm 51:7: "Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean; wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow." Here is cleansing indeed, not a cleansing from earth, but a cleansing from heaven.
Queen Victoria, as was her wont, often visited the humble and the poor. On one occasion she had been seeing a lonely cottager who was a happy believer in the Lord Jesus, and before leaving the Queen inquired if she could do anything for her. "I have all I want, thank you, Your Majesty," said the poor woman. "But I should like to do something for you," said the Queen. Again came the response, "I have all I need, thank you, but if Your Majesty would promise me one thing, I would be very glad."
"I shall do that if I can," replied the Sovereign. "Oh, Your Majesty, if you would just promise to meet me in heaven." Softly but firmly came the Queen's reply, "I shall do that, in virtue of the blood of the Lord Jesus Christ."
We have learned (again!) that snow disrupts. It disrupts our routine: hospital schedules are disrupted, school timetables are disrupted, journeys are disrupted and for a while recreational activities have an added dimension. The salvation of one's soul causes disruption too! It disrupts the way we have lived and judged heretofore. It may also disrupt friendships and how others feel about us.
