Majority decades ahead of politicians

ONE could be forgiven for being confused at this new idea of unionists reaching out to nationalists and vice versa.

I honestly believe the majority of people in this country are decades ahead of their current politicians.

Am I the only one who remembers Terence O’Neill being vilified for visiting a nunnery in his own constituency in the 1960s and for having a few innocuous meetings with Sean Lemass?

Then we had the Sunningdale agreement brought down in 1974, mainly by parties that hadn’t sufficient representation to be part of it at that time.

A bit like a child who takes his ball home when his side looks like losing the game.

Had Terence O’Neill, Brian Faulkner or David Trimble attended a gaelic football match they would have been forced to resign.
