Maze will be mecca for republicanism

I WISH to express my opposition and disgust at the proposed new “Conflict resolution centre” planned for the former Maze site.

Jeffrey Donaldson told Good Morning Ulster: “It is going to be a new purpose-built building on the Maze site. It is not in an H-block, it is going to be in a new build.”

However, the centre will sit alongside a preserved H-block and other buildings, including the chapel and the hospital where the IRA hunger strikers committed suicide.

As a resident of south Fermanagh, I have to endure numerous illegal IRA monuments dedicated to their serial killer comrades dotted around the countryside and in the local villages.

Every Easter, republican supporters hold parades at these sites and some have even trespassed on local farmers’ land to follow in the footsteps of their murderous comrades in some kind of macabre pilgrimage to commemorate and glorify their acts of murder and terrorism against the local Protestant community.

People should be in no doubt that the plan outlined will make the Maze the new mecca for republicans to continue this disgusting behaviour.

How are we supposed to move on as a people when far from accepting the wrongs committed in the past, republicans are proud of what they did and the rights and feelings of their victims are trampled upon by Sinn Fein and the DUP in this ridiculous proposal?
