Poll result may be too close to call
A General Election is imminent and, despite strong Conservative running in the poll ratings over Labour in the past year, firm predictions are that it could be a tighter race between Gordon Brown and David Cameron for residency in Downing Street.
The possibility of a hung parliament with Labour or the Tories each holding a minority of seats would not be the best result for a country requiring decisive leadership to confront problems over a receding economy, loss of jobs and global conflicts.
The gradual claw-back by Labour is surprising considering the buffeting Gordon Brown has received on a range of public issues.
This pertinently raises a question - would David Cameron do a better job in running the country?
Tory strategists, who a few months ago would have felt David Cameron was a virtual shoe-in to become the next Prime Minister, may now be experiencing some poll jitters.
However, Mr Cameron appeared buoyant in addressing a week-end conference of party activists and did not appear unnerved by latest predictions.
A major challenge for David Cameron in overturning the Government's majority is in winning seats beyond its shire heartlands in southern England. But, with Scotland and most constituencies in Wales barren country for the Tories, he has a mountain to climb to bring his present number of 196 MPs past the current 346 Labour seats.
In a hung parliament, votes of Unionist and SDLP MPs would undoubtedly assist in forming a government and, apart from the prospects of the current UUP/Tory alignment, this would be an intriguing scenario.
