Positive response urged over unity
I WRITE to commend Councillor Lee Reynolds on his excellent platform piece on unionist unity as published in your paper on January 26.
Cllr Reynolds has brought wisdom and integrity to the often squalid politics of Belfast City Hall and I commend him for that. He is someone ordinary, decent unionists should aspire to support.
I support Cllr Reynolds’ call for unionist unity after 14 years of division and rancour in the wake of the Belfast Agreement.
However, I would add that in order to bring such a situation about those in power would do well to follow Gordon Brown’s stance in the wake of a potential agreement between Labour and the Liberal Democrats in May 2010.
Resigning as Labour leader in May 2010, in the interests of an agreement between Labour and the Liberal Democrats, he said: “I believe it is sensible and it’s in the national interest to respond positively.”
Gordon Brown put his country before his own personal interests.
Unionist unity is therefore possible, but only in certain circumstances and in the absence of some divisive and self-interested personalities.
