Remember Alex at peak of his career
ALEX 'Hurricane' Higgins was a genuine sporting legend.
Like some other sporting superstars, he was a flawed character but none of that should take away from his achievements.
The word unique is often over-used, particularly in the sporting context but as far as Alex Higgins was concerned, there was no better way to describe him.
His rapid-fire style of play and his jaunty movement around the snooker table endeared him to millions of fans. He brought to the sport a sense of fun as well as incredible natural talent.
He came along at exactly the right time for snooker and played a huge part in making it so popular on television. When the Higgins name went up on a billboard, or a television programme schedule, there was an air of excitement and anticipation.
And Alex rarely let the crowd down. He was capable of playing shots that no-one else would even attempt.
He won the World Championship in 1972 and was good enough to regain it a decade later.
Those were golden years for Alex Higgins, in stark contrast to the last 10 years where he fought throat cancer and other demons.
For such a small country, Northern Ireland has produced a large number of sportsmen and women who can rightfully claim to have been world-class.
At the peak of his career Alex Higgins was simply the best and that is the way we should remember him.
