Rugby stars an example to us all
Two respondents on a recent Late, Late Show on RTE were drawn into discussion about how the Irish people might come out of recession/ depression.
They emphasised the need for self-belief as the foundation of revival.
In particular, in this respect, they stressed the value of sport, implying Gaelic games at parish level, golf, boxing and horse racing in which Irish people had recently been showing great promise and not a little success, and perhaps most germane of all at the moment, the dedication, commitment, courage and determination at national level of our national teams, most notably that of our soccer and rugby teams.
Saturday's game at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff added something more: leadership and passion in abundance.
With so much doom and gloom around, the suggestion of Eamon Dunphy and Eoghan Harris on that Late, Late Show may have been prophetic.
If we Irish people were to play for each other with the same team work, generosity and integrity as the Irish squad played after 61 years of waiting, we will together rise to the challenge of revival from recession.
But we will also require leadership as was provided by Declan Kidney, Brian O'Driscoll, Paul O'Connell and Ronan O'Gara.
Gordon D'Arcy in his interview stated that "they led from the front; we followed".
The New Ireland Group, now in its 27th year, thanks all those heroic sportsmen who have played so hard throughout this year.
Congratulations to the IRFU.
