Shameful attack on paramedic

PARAMEDICS are people who save lives and prevent suffering.

They come to our aid, like other members of the emergency services, when we need help, usually in a hurry.

Quite rightly we demand a level of professionalism from people in the medical world and we expect them to help us in whatever circumstances prevail.

And we are fortunate in Northern Ireland to have a superb dedicated group of people who act as paramedics, ambulance crew or other medical staff. They do not let us down.

But maybe we occasionally let them down.

The attack on a paramedic in Londonderry as he helped a woman at the scene of a road accident was despicable.

The paramedic was punched, kicked and dragged across the road by a group of people who had gathered at the scene. And despite the actions of the rabble, he continued to do his job and treat the woman.

We should all hang our heads in shame that society has within it low life who would carry out such an abhorrent attack.

Every responsible person in the community must unite to condemn this attack and, more importantly, they must ensure that the scum who carried it out are identified and made amenable to the law.

Some people will know the names of the attackers and they have a moral responsibility to hand over those names to the police.

That is the very least we owe the paramedic and his colleagues.

Dream fixture for new stadium

THE Irish Football Association is trying to arrange a friendly between Northern Ireland and England to mark a new era for Windsor Park in 2012.

It is hoped that a 20,000-seater arena will have been built by then and England are the preferred choice to play at the new stadium.

It was September 2005 when David Healy scored the marvellous winner that broke English hearts.

It would be wonderful to have England back in Belfast and even better to beat them again.
