Tories are committed to province

I WAS disappointed to read Alex Kane’s article about the future of the Northern Ireland Conservatives and his doubts about our party’s commitment to Northern Ireland (News Letter, July 16).

David Cameron has demonstrated absolutely his and our party’s commitment to Northern Ireland and its determination to give voters here a meaningful say in national politics.

For the first time in a generation, a national party has openly stated it will always campaign for the Union of Northern Ireland and Great Britain.,

The secretary of state, Owen Paterson, has been the foremost proponent of measures designed to grow the economy here, the Conservative-chaired Northern Ireland Affairs Committee recently advocated abolishing air passenger duty and just last week the Department of Transport saved our coastguard centre at Bangor.

At Westminster and across government, Conservatives are already acting in the interests of Northern Ireland.

That’s why, in partnership with our colleagues in the national party, Northern Ireland Conservatives remain determined to give voters here the opportunity to put local people at the heart of national politics and to adopt strategies and put forward policies that will benefit all of the people here.

Irwin Armstrong

Chairman, Northern Ireland Conservatives
