UUP-DUP talks are welcome

THE unionist electorate will welcome the news that the Democratic Unionist Party and Ulster Unionist Party held talks at the weekend hosted by the Conservative spokesman on Northern Ireland, Owen Patterson.

Party sources have denied they were about an electoral pact or voting arrangements in the event of a hung parliament.

The Conservatives said they were aimed to "promote greater political stability".

Whatever the talks were actually about, they are certainly an important development and they will be welcomed by the overwhelming number of people who vote unionist.

Fragmented unionist thinking will do little good.

Unionism needs to think smarter if it is to properly represent its

electorate and meetings like this are very encouraging.

Let us hope there are many more constructive meetings in the weeks and months ahead.
