UUP must merge or disband

I WRITE in response to your recent article (News, January 25) regarding the talks which have been taking place between the leaders of the DUP and UUP.

I would like to say well done to Peter Robinson and David McNarry for finally trying to give the unionist people what they want.

There is far too much pointless division within the unionist family, and I am utterly appalled that some UUP MLAs have been trying to scupper the good work that is being done by Mr Robinson and Mr McNarry.

It has been abundantly clear for some time that the UUP has two options: merge with the DUP or disband altogether.

Those UUP MLAs who wish their party to remain as it is will stand as much chance at the next elections as the Gladiators of Ancient Rome did against the lions.

They are fighting a lost battle as representatives of a party that no longer has a purpose or any relevance whatsoever.

Surely they must know that they will not survive the next election, but yet they appear to relish the chance to carry on into that arena and face their inevitable demise, chanting loudly as they go “Hail Caesar, those about to die salute thee!”

Ulsterwoman Tuesday, February 7, 2012 at 09:02 AM S magowan: your attitude will destroy you in the end,Bitterness will make you unhappy. We cannot alter the past but we can make the future better. Many people have suffered at the hands of killers from both sides of the divide. Be thankful you have your own life and live it Try and find the good in people and not the bad.A famous Ulsterman who was a total atheist {and a member of the Oxford think tank} decided that instead of finding reasons for there been no God he would look for reasons why there was one. Surprise! he became a devote Christian the rest of his life! C.S Lewis.

If as you say that the unions can change matters here, then why do they refuse to stand as candidates at our Stormont and council elections?.I will tell you why .They would not attract support in republican areas as they would be seen as vote splitters and in working class protestant areas they would be seen as not being trusted. As for living in the past i have too many memories of friends and loved ones who have either been murdered or injured by the IRA murder gangs to forget

Smcgowan: This is 2012! We have had a chance to look back on our mistakes and we should rectify them! Living in the past will not give our families a future.A recession has floored Ulster and our politicians have never attempted to address matters that they get well paid for. Most of the politicians are from middle and upper classes and thus the voice for the ordinary people will never be heard. The trade unions have always been a way forward for ordinary working men and the unions cross our sectarian divide. Its the only unionists I believe can help Ulster people.

Ulsterwomen they had their chance way back in1969 when posing as civil rights activists they completely turned their backs on the Protestant working class and went for the Re-unification of this Island thus unleashing the paramilitaries and 40 odd years of terror and bloodshed

Why not find a party made up from working class people from both sides of the divide? Ulster is a hot bed of middle class opportunist s whose sole interest is to amass as much money as they can as parliamentarians at the expense of ordinary people!

An alliance with an Irish nationalist party wuold sound the death knell for the Unionist party.Thetwo main Unionist parties have been'weighed in the balance and found wanting. It is now time that the pro British people had a party that united them, one from the mainland eg UKIP..For too long Tom,Peter and Basil have flirted with parties and individuals who would have us into an United Ireland by any means.

Vanguard.....You & I agree re the UUP & SDLP getting together. Elliott & McDonnell are history. McCrea has the ability to make these two parties move ahead together. NI is more than ready for more non - sectarian politics.

Adamwilliam you are 100% on the button there in my opinon. I will explore the potential benefits of this a bit further. Unfortinately I don't think that would happen under either Elliott or McDonnell, the UUP made a huge mistake by not voting Basil McCrea as leader. At least he has a bit of vision.

DUP is a Stalinist type party where the leader rules with an iron fist and no one dare challenge him. The UUP will re-emerge as the DUP fat cats fall by the wayside through their greed and deceptions. Tom Elliott would be wise not to touch them with a 40 foot barge pole.

The real answer is for the UUP & SDLP to merge.

JPGJOHNNYG, Absolutely correct, I would rather vote for almost anyone rather than than the DUP, and by extension the TUV. If the UUP were to be subsumed into (only an ejit would believe merge with) the DUP then very many would look to the Conservatives or Alliance or Green or whatever.

Merge with the DUP or disband? - Is that a threat? What about all the members and voters who want nothing to do with the DUP. THe UUP is in terminal decline but what makes you think the DUP is the only option? I think you might find there are many in the UUP who have more in common with the Tory party or Alliance party than the DUP. The simple solution is David McNarry and who ever else who regrets not joining the DUP when Jeffrey and Arlene left should just do so now and not accelerate the destruction of the party over it!
