TA gallantry deserves recognition

MORE than 100 gallant infantry battalion members of the Territorial Army sector of the Royal Irish Regiment return home to Northern Ireland today after a six-month stint in Afghanistan and welcome back receptions are planned at six military bases.
A number of the TA soldiers were injured in the Iraqi conflict, stationed as they were in the dangerous Helmand province alongside regular soldiers of the Royal Irish, and once again the sterling qualities of Ulstermen and women in the front line of battle were in evidence.

The Ulster TA detachment received a send-off from the Queen at a reception in Hillsborough Castle last March and, significantly, Her Majesty recorded her deep appreciation of their role, particularly by Northern Ireland soldiers.

Part-time TA soldiers, coming from diverse civil professions outside the military, make a very useful contribution to the British defence operations both at home and abroad and at a time of global conflict their role cannot be understated or undervalued.

They are in the best tradition of British soldiers from this island
