BULLY FOR YOU
BBC One Northern Ireland, Monday
The latest in BBC One Northern Ireland’s run of Monday night factual programmes was this interesting, if flawed, effort by filmmaker Eamonn Devlin.
Bully For You explored the taboo of bullying, with Devlin turning the camera on himself in an effort to draw a line under his own disturbing experiences as a teenager.
This was a deeply personal programme, revealing the long-lasting, emotional scars of being picked on at school.
Devlin spoke to psychologists and met three individuals who had also been tortured by bullies.
For these brave souls, their schooldays had been the unhappiest of their lives, leading to self-harm, drug abuse and overeating.
The film was well shot, but the words of the victims were emotive enough without constant cutaways to meat grinders, bloody palm-prints and knives being sharpened.
It was the kind of footage you might expect to see in a Saw film, not a serious documentary.
