There is a verse in the Bible which states "Righteousness exalteth a nation but sin is a reproach to any people".
(Proverbs 14 v 34).
Sadly, we in Ulster know only too well the humiliation and shame of sin, having been forced to endure the disgrace of a gay pride parade through our capital city.
I have absolutely no doubt that there will be those who will point to such a parade
as evidence that Northern Ireland is moving forward and that we are becoming a more liberal and tolerant society.
However, those of us who are Christians know that the Bible declares homosexuality to be an abomination (Leviticus 18 v 22) and the nation that permits homosexuals to flaunt their wicked lifestyle openly and defiantly will suffer the wrath of an angry God.
As a Province, we can be sure that no good thing will come from this parade.
Unfortunately, in Northern Ireland not only are homosexuals able to parade freely through our streets but they also receive substantial funding from the Executive, an Executive which it must be noted openly promotes and supports the homosexual agenda at every opportunity.
An example of this is found in correspondence I received from the Office of First and Deputy First Minister earlier this year. In response to a Freedom of Information request, I was informed that from July 29, 2006 the Coalition on Sexual Orientation has received £230,000 in funding from OFMDFM, £80,000 of which will be distributed in the 2008/09 year.
I am sure that many Christians will share my concern and outrage that an office, headed formerly by Ian Paisley and currently by Peter Robinson, has been responsible for funding a lifestyle that is condemned as sinful in the Bible.
Perhaps this betrayal of Biblical truth is a price that the DUP are willing to pay in order to enjoy the spoils of shared government with Sinn Fein but it would appear from the recent condemnation of homosexuality by Mrs Robinson that the conscience of some DUP members is deeply troubled over this issue.
Perhaps I could ask the 36 DUP MLAs, some of whom are ministers of the Gospel, elders and senior churchmen, how can you justify remaining part of a government that is actively promoting and supporting that which is ungodly and unscriptural?
Richard Ferguson,
Dollingstown
