Something for everyone at Maiden City Festival
THE Maiden City Festival kicks off another day of entertainment on Tuesday with a variety of music and fun.
From the sounds of Flamenco guitar to Ulster-Scots music and dance, to pageants and kids disco the day promises to be something for everyone to enjoy.
Described as one of the "leading lights" of the Irish guitar scene and "one of the most important guitarist in Ireland", Sean Woods, will kick off the afternoon at the Verbal Arts Centre at noon.
Famed for his Flamenco guitar and with numerous qualifications in music, he has given many performances in the UK, Austria and Italy as both a soloist and an ensemble musician, performing with the likes of Carlos Bonell, Margarita Escarpa and internationally acclaimed flautist Sarah Murphy. He established the first guitar orchestra in Ireland and is founder and artistic director of the City of Derry Guitar Festival.
Throughout the afternoon there are tours and talks on the Walls, along with Ulster Scots music and dance. Starting at the Roaring Meg on the Double Bastion near Bishops Gate, tour guide Norman Rossborough, will take visitors through the history of 17th century armaments, as well as demonstrating the period muskets and replica canon which are used as part of the Crimson Player's Pageant re-enactment of the Siege of Derry.
Into the evening there will be a children's pop concert in the Memorial Hall from 8pm to 10.30pm. DJ DNS and Belfast pop duo Upfront are sure to get everyone jumping. There will be face painters and cartoon characters and karaoke for the parents.
The night will be rounded off with a noisy and colourful fireworks display bursting above the ancient city walls.
The week will conclude with the Apprentice Boys of Derry 319th The Relief of Derry Celebrations.

Meanwhile, Culture Minister Gregory Campbell launched the Foyle Ulster-Scots Festival, branding it a "key" factor in promoting cultural diversity within Northern Ireland.
Speaking at the launch at the Verbal Arts Centre in Londonderry, the DUP MP said the Ulster-Scots heritage of the city will help maintain its position as one of the most popular visitor destinations in the Province.
The festival, which is part of the Maiden City Festival, runs until August 8, and includes activities such as dance, enactments, lectures and music.
