VIDEO: Farmers go to 'war' at Balmoral

THERE was sweat, toil and plenty of rain at the annual Balmoral Show tug-of-war competition.

Bragging rights and pride were at stake as Young Farmers' Clubs from across Northern Ireland participated in the yearly ritual at a wet King's Hall.

Many of the teams had spent several nights a week preparing all through the winter, with hushed tales told of teams of men hoisting heavy weights into the rafters of barns night after night in pursuit of victory.

After almost three hours of blisters, screeching voices and some muscle rub, only one team out of the thirteen participating could come out on top.

Kilwaugher YFC from Larne claimed the coveted 2009 title defeating Seaforde in the final.
