A NEW unionist movement opposed to Sinn Fein in government is to be unveiled within weeks.
MEP Jim Allister has confirmed that he is set to make an announcement, but declined to give further details.
The grouping, which aims to rival the DUP, has arisen from talks involving disenchanted unionists across Northern Ireland.
Critics have dismissed the faction, claiming it has no credible alternative to the present power sharing arrangment.
It's understood that a fundraising dinner is to be held in Templepatrick on Monday, as moves gather pace.
There is now speculation that the launch will take place in the week that First Minister Ian Paisley and Deputy First Minister Martin McGuinness seal their power sharing partnership at a meeting with US President Geaorge W Bush in Washington.
the new grouping, styling itself as a "traditional" unionist movement, vows to challnege the DUP's decision to share power with republicans.
A source said: "Unionists are aggrieved that the DUP went into government with Sinn Fein, when they said they said they would not enter such a coalition and the IRA Army Council remains.
"The recent murder of Paul Quinn has only exacerbated that sense of anger."
It's anticipated that Mr Allister will have support from United Unionist councillors in areas such as Ballymena, where half a dozen ex-DUP members formed this grouping in protest at Ian Paisley's decision to power share.
Other names mentioned include that of former hardline unionist East Londonderry MP Willie Ross.
