HAUNTING evocations of the "war to end all wars", captured by an Ulster artist, are set to go on display.
The horrors of the First World War – the trenches, smoke, gas, barbed wire and the ever-present and the likely prospect of a sudden and violent death – are captured vividly in John Connery's paintings, which can be viewed in Banbridge Town Hall from Friday.

Mr Connery, who is better known for his landscape paintings, said he chose the First World War because he wanted people to remember the sacrifice of those who fought and died.

The Scarva man usually exhibits through local galleries, but said the Some Mother's Son exhibition, named after one of the paintings, was his own project – and was a labour of love as much as a commercial venture.

"This year I thought I'd go solo in order to make the work more available to ordinary people.
