AN independent rates campaigner is to join the Alliance Party.
Billy Webb, 59, from the Newtownabbey Ratepayers’ Assoc-iation, said reforms increasing the powers of a reduced number of local councils expected in 2011 had influenced his decision.

The retired customs officer, a married father-of-four, is due to be unveiled at Stormont this week.

“I have worked closely with the Alliance Party in Newtownabbey and what they are trying to achieve I am trying to achieve,” he said.

“I want to see greater accountability in local government.

“There are issues of good relations, community relations, which is something that I am interested in.”
