FEARS were voiced last night that a cover-up has been launched to prevent the truth behind one of the most serious security scandals of the Troubles being made public.
Police have revealed they cannot disclose new evidence uncovered about the 2002 break-in at Castlereagh police station, blamed on the IRA.
The case against former chef and US resident Larry Zaitschek, who was sought in connection with the incident, has now been dropped.
Zaitschek, 41, has always denied involvement in the raid, and said he was "relieved" but "angered" about the case's collapse.
Ian Paisley Jnr said: "Here we have one of the most symbolic crimes committed against the police in decades – one of the most serious security incidents – and the case is dropped because the police can't use the evidence they have."
