Shots were fired at police in Garrison, Co Fermanagh who retaliated in the incident near the border with the Irish Republic.

Four men have been arrested in connection with the incident.

There were no reports of any injuries.

Meanwhile, a car containing an alleged 400lb bomb partially exploded outside the headquarters of the Policing Board in central Belfast.

The only damage caused was to the car itself. No one was injured.

The vehicle was earlier driven through a security barrier before two men ran away from the scene.

Detectives are also examining a second burnt out car found in the New Lodge area in the city.

Responding to the Belfast incident, PSNI Chief Constable Matt Baggott said: "This attack is an attack on the well-being of everybody in Northern Ireland, this is not about an attack on policing or the Policing Board, this is an attack on young people and young people's future."

Police are continuing to examine the scene at both locations.

Reacting to the Garrison attack, SDLP Assemblyman Tommy Gallagher expressed relief no-one was injured.

"This is a despicable throw-back to days Garrison thought it had long seen the back of, with shots and flares fired. I condemn those responsible, as does the entire community of Garrison," he said.

"Residents in Garrison have said they believe dissidents were behind the attack and there is revulsion within the community that people of this ilk can take their twisted ideologies onto the streets of Fermanagh. They have no support from the local community."
