AN overnight blaze at an Ulster beauty spot was started deliberately, the fire service have said.
The fire - which covered an area of several miles - broke out on top of the Slieve Donard mountain near Newcastle.

Two helicopters, dispatched by the Irish Coastguard and the RAF, assisted firefighters who were on the ground attempting to contain the outbreak.

Three crews battled the gorse fires before eventually containing the flames. The area will continue to be monitored.

Station commander Andy Black was critical of the actions of the arsonists. He claimed the incident was fraught with danger for fire personnel.

"Especially at night-time, it puts the firefighters at considerable risk," he said.

"They have to work in the dark and there is a danger of them falling down gullies and getting trapped."
