Man in court over Shiels murder

AN 18-YEAR-OLD man appeared in Londonderry Magistrates Court on Saturday charged with the recent murder of Emmett Shiels in the city.
The 22-year-old pizza delivery driver was ambushed by a masked gang in the Creggan area of the city before being shot.

Gary Meenan from Bishop's Street in Londonderry is also charged with a number of firearm offences.

A PSNI detective told the court he belived Mr Meenan did not fire the shots which killed Mr Shiels but was part of the masked gang involved in the murder.

The accused was remanded in custody.

On Friday, a 16-year-old girl arrested in connection with the murder was released pending the sending of a report to the Public Prosecution Service.

An 18-year-old woman has already been charged in connection with Mr Shiels' murder. She has been accused of perverting the course of justice.
