CARDS and emails from more than a 100 well-wishers have been flooding in to the practice of an Ulster-born vet since he scooped the UK Veterinary Surgeon of the Year award for 2008 last month.
Former Cookstown High School head boy Brian Faulkner, who lives and works in the east of England, was awarded the accolade at the veterinary “oscars” ceremony in Birmingham in recognition of his talent.

The judges said they were impressed with his understanding and compassion for his clients’ pets, whom he treats at the small practice, Melton Veterinary Surgery, which he set up in 2002.

In particular, they applauded him for his efforts in helping aspiring members of the profession, by providing more than his fair share of work experience placements to school pupils, a practise he deems as essential given the increasing levels of stress-related illness associated with the job.

Speaking to the News Letter from his Suffolk-based practice yesterday, Brian said that while his daily life as a vet hadn’t changed, he had to “focus on the job and not be distracted” by the fact that he had shot to success.

Brian revealed that he has received more than 100 cards and emails from well-wishers.

“It is amazing – the number of clients who heard about it on TV or through the media and came in to say well done,” he said.

“Some came in saying they always thought I should have got it (the award). I feel very honoured and privileged to have received it, and glad that people agree I should have won it.

“It’s overwhelming,” he added.

Brian admitted that Melton Veterinary Surgery has since seen its client list increase following his win: “There is definitely a buoyancy at the moment”.

But he said modestly: “I may be the most familiar face but I am not the only one in the practice, and I never would have got this far without the support of the people I have.”
