Coleraine hailed another Olympic hero yesterday after Alan Campbell took bronze in the Men’s single scull.
Twenty four hours after his Bann Rowing Club team mates secured silver in the men’s lightweight fours, Campbell dug deep and used up everything to ensure he was not denied the bronze at Eaton Dorney.
New Zealand’s Mahe Drysdale won gold and Czech Ondrej Synek took silver.
Drysdale and Synek pulled away from the field before the Kiwi powered on to seal victory by half a length.
Team GB’s Campbell, who came fifth in the event at the 2008 Beijing Games, started well but was just behind Sweden’s Lassi Karonen at the 1500m mark.
However a late surge lifted the 29-year-old Northern Ireland rower into bronze.
