East Belfast MP Naomi Long told the conference that the issue of flags on lampposts “bothers unionist voters just as much as Alliance voters”.

But she said that unionist parties lacked the courage to tackle the problem.

And Mrs Long slammed the “tawdry and shabby side deals” about on the runs which she said had undermined the Haass talks.

The Alliance deputy leader said that her father had been a member of the Orange Order, recalling how a Union Flag had been flown outside their house “like everyone else”. However, she added that she was not defined by her background but by her aspirations.

She said that the attacks on Alliance over Anna Lo’s comments about a united Ireland “expose their narrowness and our breadth”.
