Police have appealed for witnesses after a motorcyclist was killed in a traffic collision near Ballynahinch.

The male motorcyclist died following the collision on the Downpatrick Road on Monday night.

The crash happened shortly before 5.50pm at the junction of the Mossvale Road.

The PSNI is appealing for anyone who witnessed the collision or anyone who was travelling on the Downpatrick Road around the time of the collision to contact the Collision Investigation Unit at Steeple Police Station or local police at Downpatrick on the non-emergency number 101.

A PSNI spokesman said last night that they are still investigating the death and that relatives have requested privacy.

Alliance Down councillor, Patrick Clarke, said: “I am deeply saddened that this motorcyclist has lost his life on the road.

“I would like to express my sympathies to his family and friends.

“We must do more to improve road safety to prevent further lives being lost on our roads. I know the Environment Minister has looked to improve road safety through several high-profile campaigns, but it is clear that he must increase his efforts.”
