A security alert unfolded in Belfast city centre during the night after a report of a small explosion taking place.

The incident happened in the Chichester Street-Victoria Street area, a popular shopping spot, during the early hours of this morning.

Police said that shortly after midnight they were told that a small explosion had been heard in the vicinity, after a man dressed in black was seen setting an object alight.

The area was sealed off as police and the Army called out.

The PSNI said: “Following an examination of the object it was declared to be an aerosol can contained within a rucksack which had exploded causing no damage.”

Cordons were lifted at 3am.

The police appealed for anyone who noticed a man dressed in black, carrying a rucksack or any other suspicious activity in the area to contact CID in Musgrave on the non emergency number 101, or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
