The Belfast Tall Ships 2015 event was yesterday billed to be the biggest the city has seen, with an additional 30 extra vessels expected to sail in for the start of the race.

The Titanic Maritime Festival will be the starting post for the Tall Ships Races 2015, planned to take place between July 2 and July 5.

Plans for next year’s event were unveiled at a business breakfast held in City Hall, hosted by the Lord Mayor, Councillor Nichola Mallon, alongside sponsor Lidl’s Northern Ireland’s regional director, Glen Cinnamon.

Councillor Mallon told of her delight “to see Lidl getting behind the Belfast Titanic Maritime Festival which will welcome The Tall Ships Races 2015 to the biggest event ever staged in the city”.

Chair of Belfast Tall Ships 2015, Dr Gerard O’Hare, added: “The Belfast leg of the Tall Ships Race is a massive undertaking for the city and Belfast Harbour, as the event will see an estimated 500,000 descend on Belfast’s historic port.”

Next year will mark the third time the city has hosted the Tall Ships Races, with previous events in 1991 and 2009.
