Birmingham woman’s death in Newry fire ‘tragic accident’

The PSNI have ruled out foul play in a Newry fire which killed a 38-year-old Birmingham woman.

Yesterday evening police were still at the scene in the Georges Lane area of Newry. The blaze, discovered at 11pm on Saturday, was originally treated as arson.

“The investigation is ongoing but foul play is no longer suspected and there is no evidence to suggest at this stage that the death was anything other than a tragic accident,” a PSNI spokesman said last night.

A post-mortem examination was carried out yesterday. The woman’s body was found in the living room. Police continue to liaise with her family in England.

Police are still investigating the fire and have sent items for forensic examination. Officers are still seeking the two men who reported the blaze on Saturday night.
