A body found by schoolchildren during a field trip in Londonderry on Tuesday has been confirmed as that of a Belfast man who went missing last month.

A post-mortem examination was carried out and police confirmed on Thursday that the body is that of John McIlwaine.

The 54 year-old was last seen in Portstewart on April 23, and police had issued a public appeal for information on his whereabouts.

A spokeswoman for the PSNI has said they are not treating the death as suspicious and added that police are “trying to piece together John’s movements before his death”.

“(Police) are keen to speak to anyone who may have seen or spoken with John McIlwaine in the days or weeks after Wednesday 23 April,” said the spokeswomman.

A group of P7 pupils from the Model Primary School made the discovery at Magilligan Point, to the north-east of Londonderry, during late morning on Tuesday.

A 27-strong group from the Model Primary School in the west of Londonderry city were combing the beach at the time.

The children reported it to their teacher, and the authorities were contacted.
