Former Ulster Unionist leader Tom Elliott has said a recent surge in security alerts throughout the Province is a dissident republican tactic to divert police and send out a signal to incoming diplomat Richard Haass that they are “still around”.
The Fermanagh and South Tyrone MLA said: “The security alerts all have to be treated seriously in case they are genuine.
“And in some cases they are, so no risks are taken.
“But dealing with hoaxes eats up police resources.
“It also sends out a signal for Haass that they are still around.”
Police Federation chairman Terry Spence said the increase in security alerts have the “net result” of “creating massive disruption to people who live in those areas trying to get about their everyday life and business.”
