Brexit would make me feel less proud to be British

These are the main reasons why I believe the United Kingdom should remain as part of the European Union.

Firstly, as a Christian, to remain in the European Union would be in keeping with the commandment “love your neighbour as yourself”. I believe it is the right thing to do to seek to work with and within the European Union in the spirit of Christian neighbourliness. It is my view that voting to leave the European Union would be turning our backs on our neighbours in Europe.

Secondly, I am convinced that leaving the European Union would have an extremely harmful effect on the United Kingdom’s trade. As we have no way of knowing how much trade and wealth we would lose from such a big trading partner, the effects of this could be extremely damaging indeed. I have heard the argument made that the European Union needs us in the UK as much as we need them. If this is the case, surely this is even more reason to remain in a mutually beneficial relationship.

Thirdly, it is my firm belief that the United Kingdom’s security would be seriously compromised should we leave the European Union. The effects on our intelligence system are potentially catastrophic. We may well find ourselves in a situation in which the inability to secure vital information quickly enough from EU states leads to a terrorist attack taking place within our shores.

Finally, I am certain that a decision to leave the European Union will tarnish our international reputation. It would strengthen the case of those in the outside world who believe that the United Kingdom is an uncooperative country with whom they wish to have few dealings.

My British identity is important to me and always has been. However, a decision to leave the European Union would without doubt make me feel much less proud to be British.
