Business briefing on Malta investment opportunities

NORTHERN Ireland companies battling through the current economic gloom will have a chance to learn about doing business in the heart of the Mediterranean at a high-level business breakfast designed to showcase the island of Malta.

Taking place in Belfast on Friday, May 15, the event will be hosted by the inward investment agency Malta Enterprise and is aimed at local companies thinking about broadening horizons and expanding into new markets.

With a low cost workforce, responsive higher education sector and a highly competitive tax regime, the island is also an historic gateway through which to access markets including the Middle East and North Africa.

"The links between Malta and Ireland, both North and South are strengthening," said Tom Kelly, Honorary Consul for Malta in the Province.

"As a full member of the European Union, with English as its language of

business, Malta can often surprise many international visitors but with

developments like the US$300m Smart City ICT hub and Lufthansa Technick

moving a major part of their aviation maintenance operation to the island it is easy to see why confidence in the Maltese economy continues to grow at pace."

Malta Enterprise is particularly keen to engage with companies operating in high skill and technical sectors, such as chemical and pharmaceutical, aviation, IT and healthcare.

The island has also experienced growth in engineering specialties and is

well placed to attract companies across the spectrum of disciplines particularly chemical, mechanical, electrical and environmental.

One firm that has been trading in Malta for the past 15 years is Newry based FM Environmental whose Chairman Eamonn Fitzpatrick will address the event.

"The positive business culture and closely matched legal framework were

factors in our decision, and life and work in the Mediterranean is also a big attraction for some of our senior staff.

"Undoubtedly the biggest contribution it brings to FM Environmental is

the access to emerging markets, as well as a business friendly taxation regime."
