Fivemiletown cheeses have gold star quality

HANDMADE cheeses from Fivemiletown Creamery have added to the Tyrone dairy's reputation for quality after winning another raft of awards in the prestigious Great Taste Awards in London.

Organised annually by the influential UK Guild of Fine Foods, the judges rated four of Fivemiletown’s cheeses worthy of gold awards in the competition which regularly attracts around 5,000 product entries from companies across the United Kingdom, Republic of Ireland and other parts of Europe.

Fivemiletown’s Boilie goat’s cheese pearls infused with garlic oil and handmade goat’s cheese log each received two gold stars.

Two other Fivemiletown cheeses – mature cheddar and extra mature cheddar – each gained one star.

The awards, made at the weekend are just the latest won by Fivemiletown for its speciality cheeses. It also struck gold in last year’s Great Taste awards and the International Cheese Awards, also staged in the UK.

Each product entered by a company in the UK Great Taste Awards is sampled by the expert-judging panel over a period of six months.

Mervyn McCaughey, Fivemiletown Creamery Managing Director, commenting on the new gold awards, said: “Gaining a Great Taste Award from such a prestigious and highly respected organisation as the UK Guild of Fine Foods is a tremendous endorsement of the quality, taste and wholesomeness of our cheeses. It’s an important quality mark. It shows consumers that they can count on our products to deliver outstanding quality and flavour.

“The awards will benefit us as we seek to expand sales of all our products both at home and in the international marketplace.”

Fivemiletown Creamery is a farmers’ co-operative which employs around 80 people in the Tyrone town. The company draws its milk supplies mostly from around 60 dairy farmers in the picturesque Clogher Valley.

Acknowledged by producers, retailers and consumers as the definitive independent benchmark for speciality food and drink, the Great Taste Awards helps smaller producers, who lack big promotional budgets, to gain wider distribution and increase sales.

Winning foods carry the distinctive logo and producers benefit from a month-long consumer promotion in hundreds of food halls, delis and farm shops. High level national and local publicity delivers year-round promotion for winning products, with over 30 millions consumers reading about the gold star winning food and drink last year. It reminds millions of consumers that Great Taste Award winning food and drink has been independently proven to be the best.
