New jobs at House of Fraser

UP TO 50 new jobs are to be created at Belfast's Victoria Square it was confirmed yesterday as anchor tenant House of Fraser announced the arrival of a series of new brands to the flagship store.

Though full details of the new names are yet to be released, the news is another indicator of a return of confidence in the retail sector despite the ongoing problems within the local economy.

That was highlighted last week as figures showing unexpected in the UK economy as a whole were played down in Northern Ireland.

Last week the Wagamama restaurant group announced it was opening at the centre also bringing 50 jobs and House of Fraser store manager Michelle Jackson said she expected a great deal of interest in the posts.

“We have traded really well and are expecting the second half [of the year] to be huge for us and that is the reasoning behind the recruitment campaign.

“The first quarter was a bit challenging but since then we have traded strongly and we are launching several brands including Casa Couture Home and Michael Kors ladieswear.”

Another brand on the way may already be familiar with the fashion conscious and more seasoned consumer. Biba, the iconic brand of swinging London, has been acquired by House of Fraser and is to be relaunched soon across the UK.

“We are optimistic with all of the new offerings that we have to offer,” added Ms Jackson.

“We anticipate a high number of applicants. House of Fraser prides itself in offering world class service and products for its customers and the quality of our team in Belfast reflects this commitment.”

The firm opened its first store in Northern Ireland with the opening of Victoria Square in March 2008.

The 200,000 square ft store currently employs around 750 full and part time staff.
