Plan must balance growth and services
THE executive must work hard to ensure economic recovery while retaining core services if a crisis is to be avoided.
Responding to the warning of a prolonged recession from First Minister Peter Robinson, Nigel Smyth, Northern Ireland director of the business organisation the CBI, said Mr Robinson and his ministers faced a difficult task.
“The recognition from the first minister about the need for a strategic approach to the budgetary challenges that we face is critical. I also very much welcome the recognition of the importance of supporting the economic recovery and getting more people back to work.”
Provided the executive acted “corporately and strategically,” to address these funding challenges, Mr Smyth said he believed the balancing act of maintaining services while encouraging recovery could be achieved.
“In the coming weeks CBI Northern Ireland will be setting out in detail the type of strategy which the business community believe will be required,” said Mr Smyth.
“Failure to achieve this will result in a crisis of confidence in the executive and a crisis in the delivery of public service outcomes. Success on the other hand will provide an important boost to confidence and help build a more balanced and successful economy.”
