Warning against spending cuts

Spending cuts would deepen the recession and endanger the fabric of society in Northern Ireland, a senior union official warned yesterday.

Public services need to be protected and developed, Unison general secretary Dave Prentis said.

He addressed a meeting in Belfast amid proposed budget cuts across the government, including in health and education.

Executive departments need to save around 400 million in the next financial year because of decisions like the continued deferral of water charges and the tougher economic climate.

Mr Prentis said: “It is now clear that even more drastic cuts are to come. There is no guarantee that the block grant from the UK Treasury will be protected or uplifted.

“This places the very fabric of society in Northern Ireland in jeopardy and is guaranteed to deepen economic recession.”

If there is a tightening of public expenditure, that affects 32 per cent of employees in Northern Ireland compared to 21 per cent in Great Britain.
