WFS delivers for search and rescue sector

WFS Defense, a world leading supplier of wireless radio frequency (RF) technology for communication, navigation and power transfer, has delivered the first ever radio-enabled, unmanned robotic vehicle permitting operation in some of the most challenging underground environments.

From its design centre at the Northern Ireland Science Park, the firm has developed its Terratext and Terratooth wireless radio systems which have now been integrated into an iRobot Negotiator to allow real-time command and control of a robot through the ground.

The innovative system enables remote operation of robots in emergency situations for people trapped in caves, tunnels and collapsed building as well as offering wireless video streaming, tracking provisions and wireless power transfer to facilitate recharging.

The system is the latest development from the privately owned firm founded in 2003 and which operates from offices in Livingston and Aberdeen, in Scotland, Belfast, and Houston and Washington in the US.

“With support from Invest Northern Ireland and Systems Engineering & Integrated Systems for Defence: Autonomous & Semi Autonomous Vehicles (SEAS) we have developed pioneering equipment for the search and rescue sector,” said WFS CEO Dr Mark Volanthen.

“After spending a long time at the design stage in our facilities at the Science Park, we partnered with iRobot and the University of Ulster to carry out a series of field trails in Strangford Lough to help demonstrate the benefits of our through-ground wireless radio technology to unmanned vehicles underground.

“All the hard work has really paid off and we look forward to the commercial opportunities that this breakthrough will provide.”
