Firms limber up for Olympics
QUALITY must form the core of any Olympics bid from businesses in the Province hoping to win contracts from the Games.
That was the advice yesterday from Invest Northern Ireland which is backing local firms in their bids to win construction and service contracts in the run up to and during the world event.
The call came as 18 local companies took part in an Invest NI workshop on Quality Management Systems, where they were briefed on the importance of established and accredited quality systems when bidding for contracts tendered through the CompeteFor website - a free service enabling businesses to compete for contract opportunities linked to the Games and other major public and private sector buying organisations.
The workshop featured presentations on quality management systems, the support for companies wishing to develop such systems and a briefing on business opportunities currently available for companies which register on the CompeteFor website.
“Assisting companies to compete for London 2012 business is one of our priorities,” said Invest NI Trade Director, Dr Vicky Kell.
“We’ve already organised a series of briefing seminars and visits to the Olympic site as part of our drive to encourage companies to position themselves to bid for the business.
“A key requirement is that they show they have established quality management systems, because the organisers are keen to ensure that quality underpins all the infrastructural projects associated with the Olympic and Paralympic Games.
“It’s essential, therefore, that companies have the right systems in place to enable to qualify for business. We can help companies in developing quality management systems through our Technical Assistant Unit. Indeed, we are already working with a number of local companies,” she said.
Stating that additional opportunities are coming on stream through the supply chain of the Games’ London Organising Committee, Dr Kell added: “By being well-qualified on this portal, our companies can also demonstrate their capability to bid for similar work.”
Companies registering and publishing their details on CompeteFor can find out about the range of opportunities coming up and how to compete for them as well as demonstrating to buyers the services they can offer.
Invest NI is one of the regional development agencies supporting CompeteFor which is delivered through a partnership between public and private sector organisations, working closely with the London Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games (LOCOG) and the Olympic Delivery Authority (ODA). Around 1,200 local companies have already registered on the site.
