Fivemiletown Brie wows international experts
SPECIALITY cheeses from Fivemiletown Creamery in Co Tyrone struck gold yesterday at the prestigious Nantwich International Cheese Awards in England.
The creamery, a market leader in handmade cheeses, pipped 600 other producers from 24 countries – including France, the home of Brie – to win gold for its Ballyoak Smoked Brie.
Some 3,000 cheeses were displayed to a panel of expert judges by the 600 producers taking part in the event.
Fivemiletown, a dairy co-operative which has enjoyed massive growth in recent years, also gained silver and bronze awards for Boilie brand goat’s cheese filled with pesto and black olive tapenade and garlic infused oil respectively.
Fivemiletown is Northern Ireland’s only speciality cheese producer. It employs 80 staff and works closely with food development experts at Loughry College in Cookstown on new products and processes.
The range is now sold across the British Isles, Europe, the US and Honk Kong.
The international awards follow the company’s success last week in the Great Taste Awards, which saw the judges award a string of medals to specialist food producers across the province including seven to Fivemiletown.
Commenting on the most recent accolade, Fivemiletown managing director Mervyn McCaughey described Nantwich as a highlight in the global food calendar.
“The awards will help us as we seek to drive the company to even greater success, both at home and internationally,” he said.
“Winning two golds and a bronze here is a marvellous endorsement of the quality and innovation of all our products and the tremendous commitment of everyone at Fivemiletown, from the farmers who ensure we have the best milk available, to the cheesemakers who lovingly make our cheeses by hand, to the marketing team which has helped us grow our international business, and the support staff who enable the business to run smoothly and efficiently.”
